Uganda Cranes skipper Denis Masinde Onyango has made the Confederation of African Football 34-man shortlist for the African Footballer of the year prestigious award.
The 2016 African Player of the year (African based) has been noticed for his impressive form for both club and country over the past twelve months.
He will hope make the top three this time around as the 34-man list released by CAF on Friday morning comprises of other African players plying their trade abroad.
The number will be reduced to final three before the crowning awards ceremony which will be staged in Dakar, Senegal in January, 2019.
Onyango, who names SC Villa, St.George and Super Sport United as his former employers has just helped Uganda Cranes to qualify to next year’s Afcon Finals in Cameroon keeping five clean sheets in the process.
While Sundowns were knocked out of the 2018 Caf Champions league in the group stages, Onyango was instrumental as the Brazillians won their eighth PSL title earlier this season.
Egypt’s Mohamed Salah, holder of the award is on the list with Sadio Mane and Kalidou Koulibaly of Senegal, Manchester City Riyad Mahrez from Algeria, Gabonese striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who plays for Arsenal in the English Premier League amongst others are included in the released.
The winners for the African Player of the Year will be decided by the CAF Technical & Development Committee, Media Experts, Legends, Coaches of the quarter-finalists of the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup, Coaches and Captains of the national teams of the 54 Member Associations.
