Vipers begins January transfer business with Wafula

The Reigning League Champions have announced the signing of utility player Innocent Wafula on a three year deal.

Wafula, a Kenyan of Ugandan decent, has been heavily linked to joining the Kitende-based side in recent past following the player’s failure to agree a contract renewal with Kenyan giants Gor Mahia.

He was a conspicuous figure in the stands as Vipers SC were ejected out of the CAF Champions league at home by Algerian giants CS Constantine late last month.

And since then, reports have been rife that it was matter of time the Venoms will get their man.

The club confirmed Wafula’s signing via their official website on Sunday.

Vipers Sports Club confirms the arrival of Innocent Wafula as a new player at the club. The winger cum right back has officially joined the club. Wafula who has been plying his trade with Kenyan champions Gor Mahia joins us on a three year deal, for an undisclosed fee. He becomes the first signing for Vipers SC in the January transfer window.

Wafula is no stranger to Ugandan football. He has ever turned out for Jinja based side Kirinya Jinja SS when it was still in the lower leagues a couple of years ago.

However, the search for pastures green took him to the K’Ogolo in the Kenyan Premier League.

He couldn’t hide his excitement during his unveiling at St.Mary’s Stadium.

“I am, of course, delighted and very proud to be joining Vipers SC. I’m very happy to be here and to be a Venom. I really felt that the club wanted me to come. I will give my best on the pitch, and hopefully be a very good player for this team.”

He is expected to make his debut this week when Vipers take on Onduparaka FC in the Uganda Premier League.

Wafula’s forte is his versatility. He can play either as a right back or right winger starring in each role with distinction.

He brings competition to the right back department which is well staffed with the likes of Bashir Asiku, Fred Okot and Ibrahim Kiyemba.

Noah Wafula, Abraham Ndugwa, Dickens Okwir and Brian Nkuubi Ssemakula are Wafula’s competitors for the right wing attacking department.

Innocent Wafula will also be used in the CAF Confederation Cup campaign.

However, the Venoms are expected to add more new faces to their squad in the ongoing widow with the deal to land forward Hamis Diego Kiiza in the pipeline.
