Stanbic Uganda Cup
Jinja SS 0-1 Onduparaka
URA 5-1 Synergy
Solomon Okwalinga scored the all important goal in the last minute of four added time as Onduparaka secured a hard fought 1-0 away win against Kirinya Jinja SSS on Friday at the Mighty Arena in Jinja during the 2018/19 Stanbic Uganda Cup round of 32 tie. The 2016 losing finalists had been eliminated by Tooro United last season whilst Jinja SSS got ejected by regional league side Seeta United at the round of 64. Despite Okwalinga turning out the hero, the Caterpillars have to thank their goal keeper Nicolas Ssebwato for the numerous heroic saves that kept them in the game to progress to the last 16. It was the second home loss for Jinja SSS against the West Nile side this season, having earlier lost 3-0 in the league first round. Jinja SSS Head Coach Charles Ayiekoh was not impressed with Fufa’s refusal to postpone the fixture. “We dominated and had many chances but we were unlucky. I blame the organisers because we played on Wednesday from Mbarara yet Onduparaka played on Tuesday and in Kampala; that is an imbalance in the way clubs are handled. We were fatigued and it was visible,” he said before he conceded defeat. At Namboole stadium, three-time champions URA FC hammered regional league side Synergy FC 5-1. Impressive Saidi Kyeyune, Robert Mukongotya (x2), Patrick Mbowa and Ronald Musana scored for the Sam Ssimbwa side while Robert Ssentongo Kayuuni scored the visitors’ consolation. Synergy lost to eventual winners KCCA FC 10-0 on aggregate at last year’s semi final but their squad was left depleted after numerous many players leaving the club. The Stanbic-sponsored Cup returns today with Big league side Bumate hosting top flight Bright Stars in Bundibugyo. The winners of the 45th edition have Shs40m cash prize at stake on top of representing the country at the subsequent CAF Confederations Cup while the runners have Shs20m courtesy of Stanbic bank. KCCA FC are the reigning and record ten-time champions.
