Both the Boys and Girls schools are set for the first edition of the Elite schools football tournament.
St Mary’s –Kitende one of the favorites schools will have to find their way out of the group stage after the draws held on Tuesday pitted them in a group of death.
With the 2019 Federation of Uganda football association (FUFA) and Uganda Senior Secondary Schools Association (USSSA) first edition of elite schools football tournament getting underway on Monday January 28th to Wednesday 30th 2019, the school’s football giant St Mary’s Kitende has been drawn against 2017 Copa Cola Champions Jinja Secondary School, Kawempe Muslim and Wakiso rivals the 2017 Copa Cola quarter finalists Dynamic ss in Pool C.
It should be remembered that Jinja SS beat St Mary’s Kitende in the Copa Cola National schools final held in masaka after a one all draw in penalties by 5-3.
Only twelve schools have confirmed participation in the first edition of the elite schools football tournament boys category and grouped in three pools with the Copa Cola National schools champions 2018 Buddo sss placed in Pool A alongside Rakasingache, Boston High school and record holders Kibuli sss, While in Pool B, has Standard High Zana, Nakaseke International, Old Kampala and St Mary’s Nabweru who last featured in the National schools tournament hosted in Soroti Teso College (Aloet) in 2016 .
Meanwhile, in the girl’s category only eight schools have registered and grouped into two Pools with Girls football power house school Kawempe Muslim placed in Pool B alongside St Noa Girls School, Pride College and Wakiso Hill School.While Dynamic ss, Rines High school, Uganda Martyrs Rubaga and Gadafi Integrated Academy in Pool A.
Ayubu Khalifan, the Publicity secretary of USSSA confirmed to Sports Oceans that this is the first edition of the FUFA-USSSA elite schools football tournament and its aim to help schools to test themselves before the qualifiers of the Copa –Cola National schools tournament.
“Schools have been recruiting new faces and have not been given apple time to test them so as USSSA and FUFA we decided to have a try with a few schools that need to test their new players before the national qualifiers and schools known for promoting sports in the country welcomed the idea and registered,” Khalifan said.
“This tournament is going to help them and come the national qualifiers in their various districts they will be competition,” he added.
The tournament will run for three days and will be held at Mandela National stadium-Namboole both the main and outside pitch on 28th to 30th.
