Local tennis is set for a boost following the introduction of the Kampala Junior Open scheduled for this January 30–31 at Lugogo Tennis Courts, Kampala. The two-day tournament organised by Red Rhino aims at providing junior tennis players with a competitive platform to sharpen their skills to prepare them for international competitions. The competition will have Singles and Doubles events for both boys and girls in the age categories of U18, U16, U14 and U12. Local tennis legend, John Oduke who has been appointed the tournament Referee, welcomed the competition –saying that it will help unearth future tennis stars. “This is a timely tournament coming at the back of the Junior Tennis Initiative that has seen a number of youth being trained across the country. As you know, it is one thing to train and it is another to compete. This tournament will help our junior players by providing them with a competitive platform to test their tennis skills against other players and see where they need to improve”, Oduke said. “The tournament has been designed in such a way to give players maximum playing time with the Singles events having a back-draw whilst the Doubles events being a straight knockout. Each competitor is expected to play in both Singles and Doubles events”, Oduke added. The tournament has been sanctioned by UTA with deadline for submission of entries set for this Thursday 24 and draws set for Monday, January 28.
