FUFA and National insurance corporation (NIC) have unveiled a new and better insurance sponsorship for Uganda Cranes. The new four-year deal was unveiled at NIC offices on Thursday in Kampala; with NIC delegation led by Managing Director Falayan Bayo while FUFA President Eng. Moses Magogo led the federation’s delegation. The new deal covers all the players, coaching staff and team doctor against death and injuries resulting into permanent disability sustained while on official duty. It also covers incidents during training as well as travels to and from matches and burial arrangements in case death occurs. Unlike the previous contract, this time around the FUFA Junior league, Fufa Drum tournament (started last year) have also been covered with worth Shs800m and shs960m insurance packages respectively. There is also a cash sponsorship of Shs10m annually specifically for the annual Airtel-FUFA awards while NIC will also proved FUFA with a generator worth $18000. Speaking to the media, NIC’s Bayo said that the sponsorship is in line with NIC’s continued support of Uganda’s sport. “We believe that the youth are the future of the country and that is why this partnership goes a long way to support the efforts of government in the area of youth and sports development,” he said, before hailing Magogo and Fufa at large upon their achievements. Bayo said that NIC wants to create an enabling environment for the footballers so that they can compete on a global platform and rank among the best in the world. FUFA’s Magogo hailed NIC for supporting the game whilst highlighting the impact of the new deal. “The generator will cater for our new offices we recently acquired. NIC earlier gave us two generators in the previous deal which we use at our offices in Mengo and Njeru technical center. This means we can’t fail to conduct business because of power shortage. Fufa Drum tournament and the Fufa Junior league getting insurance is another milestone to celebrate. To us, the Fufa Junior league is the future and we take it as a project. The Drum tournament took the game to the remote areas like Moroto where people paid to watch football for the first time. The Drum tournament’s bigger risks can be handled by this insurance package,” noted Magogo. NIC first insured the Uganda Cranes in 2018 and continues to do so to uplift the standard of sports in Uganda as part of the company’s community development programme. Another area of sports in which NIC is actively involved is netball as way of empowering the girl child. For over 15 years, NIC netball club has won numerous local, regional and continental championships.
