The draws for the 8th edition of Pepsi University football league group stage were held on Saturday at Kaki Kati restaurant with champions Kyambogo University drawn in a relatively average group C, alongside Kumi University, Busitema University and either Makerere or Kampala International university (KUI) whose case is yet to be decided by the organising committee. Makerere were making a return to the Pepsi-sponsored competition from suspension, and the inaugural winners played KIU, who had been relegated last season in the preliminary round, to determine who storms the group stage. Makerere (MAK) won 1-0 in the first leg before losing by similar score in the return leg -which called for penalties to decide the aggregate winner. But after MAK missed 2 of their 3 kicks, fans invaded the pitch and denied KIU that had converted all their two kicks to take the third; which could have sent them through had the game not been aborted. According to reliable sources, KIU are likely to be the boardroom winners to join the other three teams in group C. Kyambogo beat two-time champions Kampala University (KU) in the final last year to claim their maiden title. The 2019 Group stage kicks off on February 14 with the fixtures expected today. This season’s league group stage expanded from 16 to 19 clubs after addition of three teams from the preliminary round. The relegated sides from last season and new comers took part in the preliminary elimination round. The three new teams at the group stage are; Gulu University that beat Muni from Arua 6-1 on aggregate, Nkumba that saw off Kabale University 5-1 on aggregate and either Makerere or KIU that await for boardroom decision after abortion of their second leg in Nsambya.
