Two-time champions Makerere University Business School (MUBS) begin their campaign in this season’s Pepsi University Football League when they host Uganda Christian University (UCU) this Tuesday at Nakawa in what has been billed the Group of Death.
The two teams last met in 2017 with UCU winning both home and away. Prior to that, the two teams drew 1-1 in 2014.
MUBS who won back to back league titles in 2014 and 2015 have struggled in recent years in the Pepsi-sponsored tournament failing to make it past the group stage last season.
However, MUBS coach Charles Ayiekoh says his team has come of age and he is certain that his team are bidding for the title this season.
“It’s true we struggled last season. However, I believe that the team has come of age and will mount a serious title challenge this season. We are in the toughest group in the league but to be a champion you have to beat champions so we are not worried,” Ayiekoh said.
Regarding UCU’s unbeaten run against MUBS, Ayiekoh said his side will break that record this afternoon.
“Records are there to be broken and tomorrow we are going to get our first win against UCU. No team can’t be beaten and I believe we have what it takes to win tomorrow,” Ayiekoh added. For Uganda Christian University coach, Mwera Jimmy, the strong record against MUBS is not very important. “You cannot rely on records because each game is totally different from the other. Records don’t play on the pitch,” Mwera noted. “We are simply going out to play and win. It’s going to be a difficult game because MUBS are a tough team especially at home but I am confident we shall get all three points,” Mwera added.
Action continues on Wednesday when St. Lawrence University host former champions Uganda Martyrs University.
