St. Lawrence vs Uganda Martyrs, Kavulu
Last season’s second runners-up St. Lawrence University (SLAU) and former champions Uganda Martyrs University, Nkozi (UMU) played to a 1-1 draw on Wednesday at Kavulu, Mpigi in the 2018/19 Pepsi University Football League group B opening game. Isaac Ogwang put the hosts ahead five minutes past hour mark before Livingstone Mbigo scored the visitors’ equaliser with a stunning long range in the 80th minute. This was the first meeting between the two sides. SLAU joined the league in 2016 while UMU are a pioneer team in the Pepsi-sponsored league. SLAU finished third last term after beating Bugema University 5-0 in the third place playoff having lost initially lost to Kampala University (KU) in the semi-finals. UMU were knocked out at the quarter-finals by eventual champions Kyambogo University on away goals. UMU, who are the 2017 winners are under new coach Noah Mugerwa following the departure of Shafiq Bisaso. Mugerwa, who has previously coached Busujju in the Airtel-Masaza Cup was happy with a point in his first game in the Pepsi-sponsored University Football League. Gulu and Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) are the other sides in Group B.
