Jinja Hippos claimed their second Jinja derby victory with a 33-07 triumph against league debutants Walukuba over the weekend during the fourth last fixture of the 2018/19 Nile Special Rugby Premiership at Dam Waters Rugby Grounds, Jinja.
Walukuba had claimed the first derby 14-12 at the Abel Dhaira Memorial Stadium, Bugembe –thanks to Godwin Abwang and Alex Aturinda tries that were converted by Pool Kalungi. Since then, Walukuba are yet to win again.
The triumph hence ensured that Jinja Hippos, currently sponsored by Nile Precision Surveys, delivered their revenge in front of their fans.
Hippos’ fly half John Echeru ran the show at Dam Waters to claim Man of the match honors. “They had to pay for what they did earlier on. Also playing at home was an advantage,” Hippos Coach Saidi Atibu noted, adding that the new sponsorship package from Nile Precision Surveys is also another huge boost for his side.
“We have always been struggling financially but this $1000 package will motivate the team,” he said. Hippos are seventh on the 10-team table and will play MRI Rams next at the Makerere Graveyard Rugby Grounds and their remaining three fixtures are all on the road.
Rams suffered a slender 18-17 defeat to Rhinos at Legends last time out and will seek amends do away relegation threats.
