Uganda Junior tennis teams (girls and boys Under 12) on Sunday won Gold and Silver at the ITF/CAT EA (International Tennis Federation/Confederation of Africa Tennis East Africa) Junior Circuit held in Kenya’s Capital, Nairobi.
The tournament that ran from 06th to 10th March 2019 saw Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Somalia, Burundi, Rwanda and Seychelles junior teams take part.
In the finals, dominant sides Uganda and Kenya faced off and Ugandan boys lost 1-2 while the reverse was true for the girls’ pool. In the girls’ finals, Uganda’s Eseza Muwanguzi and Maggie Namaganda dominated both singles and doubles showdown.
In boys case, all three weapons were deployed with Nyata Junior and and Troy Zziwa playing in singles against Kenya’s Baraka Ominde and Virani Raqeem respectively.
In the doubles, Allan Otto was thrown in the mix together with Troy Zziwa to beat Kenyan duo of Ominde and Raqeem.
The boys’ false finals display was Uganda’s only loss in the entire tournament and Coach Edward Odocken is happy with the performance.
“I am very delighted with the game these kids displayed in Nairobi. We shall continue training hard in Lugogo ahead of the Africa Junior games.” Uganda alongside Kenya will represent East Africa during the ITF Africa Junior Championship scheduled for September 2019 in Morocco.
Uganda had fielded a contingent of six players and two coaches funded by National Council of Sports (NCS) and Uganda Tennis Association (UTA).
