2019 Hong Kong Sevens

Uganda Rugby Cranes 7s Results

Germany 19-12 Uganda

Chile 33-07 Uganda

Uganda 29-24 Cooks Island

Uganda Rugby Cranes Sevens team put up a dismal show at the 2019 Hong Kong Sevens played at the Hong Kong stadium over the weekend. The Hong Kong event was also a qualifier for the World Series. Drawn in Pool G, the Rugby Cranes 7s managed only a single win in their group stage fixtures –against Cooks Island hence packing their bags before the end of the tournament having lost against Germany and Chile on the opening day. Uganda launched a spirited fight against Germany in their opening fixture, thanks to Timothy Kisiga’s two tries with Philip Wokorach’s extras but the 2016 and 2017 Africa champions lost 19-12. This was an improved display compared to last year’s 29-00 mauling at the same event by similar opponents.  Uganda’s fate was almost sealed when they lost 33-07 to Chile in the second game on Friday. The Tolbert Onyango’s side managed only one try courtesy of Pirates full back Timothy Kisiga with a Philip Wokorach conversion. Uganda managed to attain an absolution against Cooks Island with a slim 29-24 triumph but failed to proceed to the next level as the best loser. Skipper Michael Wokorach, Joseph Aredo, Philip Wokorach (2) and Byron Oketayot featured on the try sheet with Wokorach and Aredo sharing a conversion apiece. The team now has to gather another form of steam for the Olympic qualifiers.
