Over 50000 runners are expected to grace the forthcoming Africell Uganda marathon, themed ‘Run for education’ scheduled for June 1 in Masaka starting at Liberation grounds. According to Andrew Bownds, the Uganda Marathon community manager, this is the fourth edition of the charitable run since its inception in 2015 and Buganda’s Prince David Wasajja will be the chief runner this year.

“We shall also have entertainment from John Blaq, DJ Shiru, Kent and Flosso, Spice Diana, Masaka kids Africana dance group among others and these while So Sure will provide the re-usable sanitary pads to girls on top of providing medics for the run. “Registration is already on at Africell selling points in Kampala, Masaka and Mbarara at Shs10000. We expect over 5000 runners to partake in the marathon that has directly supported over 10000 vulnerable people in Greater Masaka,” Mark Aad, the Head of marketing at Africell told the media on Thursday at Africell Head quarters in Kampala.
This year, the proceeds from the Africell-sponsored marathon will be geared towards Education in Masaka through supporting schools like St Jude primary school (Building of fresh water well), Jomain Midland academy (Building of Girls dormitory), Primer Junior school (Building and start-up costs for a poultry house) and Kisa Kya Mukama primary school (2 acre food forest and piggery program).
The Uganda Marathon has had four editions with this expected to be the biggest ever. Participants from all over the world come to take part in this marathon with the proceeds going towards supporting various charity causes.
