Having settled for Silver at the 2019 Copa Coca-Cola schools football tournament in Jinja last month, Jinja Senior Secondary School have already started preparations for the forthcoming East Africa secondary school games to be played in Arusha.
School Head teacher Dianah Nyago says that the school targets bringing the regional trophy to Jinja for the first time.
“Our target is to win it for the Eastern region. Apart from academics, we are doing well in promoting sports and talents in the region. That is why we have produced two Copa Most valuable players and top scorers in the games in the last three years,” Nyago told the press.
Jinja SSS lost 1-0 to eventual champions St. Mary’s SS, Kitende but had Edrine Opaala and Lawrence Tezikya named MVP and top scorer respectively.
The duo is also firing in the FUFA Junior league with 10 and 11 goals respectively. Nyago also thanked the fans for the huge turn up but condemned the chaos that was witnessed during the Copa final game. “The fans were massive.
It was overwhelming. I believe the organisers had not witnessed that before. The scenes witnessed in the final are regrettable but I believe it is because of the emotions in some sections of fans.
“We request the organisers to pick the positives from the tournament and think about returning it to Jinja. I am sure that with better planning and organisation, such won’t recur,” she noted.
Champions St Mary’s SS, Kitende, Jinja SSS and regional reigning champions Buddo SS will represent Uganda in the regional (football) games due August.
