Nkumba University (NUVC-A) retained the women Rwanda Genocide Memorial tournament championship title on Sunday after beating Rwanda Revenue Authority(RRA) 3-0 (25-13, 25-21, 25-22) in the 2019 final in Kigali, Rwanda.
Nkumba finished the tournament undefeated and Flavia Nandawula was named best Libero of the tournament while her team mates; Grace Akiror and Sayder Kawere were named MVP and best blocker respectively. Last year, Nkumba defeated Kenya Commercial bank (KCB) 3-1 (23-25, 25-15, 25-22 and 25-19) to win the title.
Meanwhile, UTB beat REG volleyball club in the final 3-2 (52-15, 21-25, 19-25, 25-10, 15-13) to win the men title. UTB had a cast of Uganda professional duo of Daudi Okello and Karthbert Malinga, who were named Most Valuable Player (MVP) and Best attacker respectively.
The annual Rwanda Genocide Memorial volleyball tournament has been on since 2013 to remember sportsmen and women killed during the 1994 Rwanda Genocide. In the same vein, Uganda will host a fleet of East Africa Volleyball sides for the 2019 NSSF-KAVC international tournament due August 2–4.
