Uganda finally won the Victoria Cup after beating Kenya 14-12 during the fourth edition of the tournament last Saturday at the Uganda Golf Club (UGC), Kitante. The annual tournament is played between top amateur golfers from Uganda and Kenya and the latter has won the previous three editions.

In the 2019 edition, the two teams had four points each on day one (Thursday). Uganda took a 3-1 lead in round one (fourball betterball) before Kenya paid back with similar score in round two (foursomes).

In day two (Friday), Kenya posed a two-point lead and were nine points up against Uganda’s seven. Kenya garnered five points against Uganda’s three in all rounds that day.

“After day two results I was really scared, I do not know what I would be saying if we had lost. In day three, we regrouped ourselves and made sure that we won the tournament. It is always good when you are chasing from behind,” Uganda Golf Union (UGU) President – Innocent Kihika revealed.

In day three (Saturday), Uganda returned five points against Kenya’s three to win the tournament by 14-12.

Albeit the loss, Kenya Golf Union Chairperson Anthony Murage, still prides in other benefits that come along with the tournament including social interaction and regional integration. “We are all winners,”  Murage said.

Africa Golf Confederation President – Johnson Omollo and other distinguished guests attended the award-giving ceremony on Saturday.

KCB Bank Uganda was the prime sponsor while Uganda Tourism Board (UTB), Pepsi, Nation Media Group, Johnnie Walker and Tusker Malt Larger were co-partners. Kenya will host the 2020 edition of the Victoria Cup.
