UBF Novice championship underway in Kamwokya

Boxers go through medical examination on Tuesday

The 2019 Uganda boxing federation (UBF) national novice championship action gets underway this Thursday at the Kira road police play grounds. Over 500 boxers are set to exchange jabs, hooks, upper-cuts, cross, overhead and straight punches in the one-week championship that climaxes on August 8.

The championship activity road map started with a technical meeting on July 26 and a press conference three days later in Lugogo. The medical checkup and weigh-in was held on July 30 and July 31 respectively with action set to throw off this Thursday.

UBF President Moses Muhangi says that every approved member club will present boxers at the championship that received sponsorship boost from BetOn betting firm on Tuesday.

“We went to an open space to take boxing closer to people in order to grow its fan base again. We expect big people from our partners like UNaids and UNwomen, BetOn, Street finace, Gong record, Top Boy promotions and government. Over 10000 fans, especially from the ghetto, are expected at the venue at no cost. We have already worked hand in hand with police and other security agencies to ensure safety. We expect the best boxing and the winners will qualify for intermediate championship before the National Open,” noted Muhangi, who revealed that there will be education about HIV/Aids prevention and treatment, domestic violence by UNaids and UNwomen as well as financial management literacy education by NSSF.

“As usual, since I came into UBF administration, we shall have prizes for the winning clubs and boxers. We encourage Ugandans to come and support the boys and girls as we struggle to make Uganda’s golden sport great again,” added Muhangi.

Meanwhile, the national boxing team (Bombers) preparing for this month’s All Africa Games in Rabat, Morocco will have their elimination trials on August 6 when the Novice take a break for two days before the final on August 8.
