The 23rd NSSF-KAVC International Volleyball invitational Championship is on this weekend at the Lugogo Arena and Hockey grounds.
The three-day championship was officially launched on Friday and will climax on Sunday with local Men and Women clubs set to battle invited foreign sides.
Hosts and Men defending champions Kampala Amateur Volleyball Club (KAVC) are set to fend off challengers to retain the title.
KAVC recovered from two sets down to beat Rwanda side Gisagara 3-2 (17-25, 19-25, 25-20, 25-16, and 17-15) Gisagara VC in last year’s final and Coach Amon Ainebyona hopes they can pull it off again this year.
“We have top teams from Rwanda, Burundi and Kenya who chase the trophy and of course local rivals. We shall treat each game like a final. We have been preparing for this event ever since the year began and the boys are in good shape to retain the trophy,’ Ainebyona noted. KAVC’s Daudi Okello and Kathbert Malinga emerged the tournament Most Valuable Player (MVP) and Best attacker respectively.
Winners for both Men and Women categories will bag $2,500, runners up will take $1,500 while second runners up will get $1,000.
