The Uganda boxing federation (UBF) administration is leaving no stone unturned en route to professionalism in a bid to bring back the country’s golden sport to the limelight.

Two weeks ago, the federation extra general assembly sat at Kati Kati restaurant, Lugogo and vetted member clubs to find out the legit affiliated members.

For the club to be counted genuine, it had to score at least 70% of the parameters earlier set in the assembly. According to UBF President Moses Muhangi, no new boxing club will be endorsed without a proper training facility, constitution, administration structure, at least six boxers, coaches and routine participation in UBF activities.

The club must also regularly pay the subscription fees. “We looked at the boxers, well built training ground, coaches, affiliation and boxing activity of the club to be counted a legit UBF member. The rest can be gradually worked on. We need to upgrade and any club that fell short of the minimal standards has to re-apply for affiliation as unanimously decided by the members in the Extra general assembly,” noted Muhangi, after report by the inspection team that toured all the clubs across the country.

The inspection team of Bombers team manager Zebra Ssenyange and team doctor Martin Ntulume found out that only 33 of the 66 clubs registered in 2013 were legit.

Among the clubs that failed to meet the pass mark were those belonging to former UBF administration of Kenneth Gimugu, Fred Kavuma and Paul Ayiasi. The trio was last year suspended by the assembly for 11 years for mismanagement.

Of the 33 clubs, Gulu, Gideon and Mbale boxing clubs have to pay the affiliation fees arrears in a period of six months to attain full affiliation.

There are also clubs that got affiliated in between 2013 to date and have all the necessary minimum requirements.

These 15 clubs are on provision list but take part in the UBF activities pending their approval at the next General assembly. There are also nine clubs that have applied for affiliation also waiting for confirmation at the next General assembly.
