The proceeds from the 23rd edition of the annual Nkumba University Volleyball Open (Nkumba Open) towards the heart surgery of Benedict Tukshaba, primary four (P4) student at St Agnes Centre of Education, Mbarara.
The 2019 tournament was launched on Thursday and is scheduled for September 6–8 at the University’s sports complex in Entebe.
The tournament will also serve as a curtain raiser for the Nkumba Volleyball festival slated for September 28-29 at the MTN Arena in Lugogo as the final event of the University’s Silver jubilee celebrations.
Tukashaba’s surgery cost is around Shs18m which is needed by October 21, 2019 for the processes to be carried out at the Uganda Heart Institute.
This year’s Nkumba Open is expected to be embraced by clubs, institutions and corporate teams. Five clubs are coming from South Sudan, including Cobra Sporting Club (Men and Women) and Jur River Volleyball Club (Men and Women).
Nkumba, who are sponsored by KCB Bank-Uganda are the women’s title holders while UCU Doves are men champions. In the institutions category, Nkumba University are the men champions while the women are opposite champions.
Boston High School and Katikamu SDA are the boys and girls secondary schools champions respectively. St James Primary and Sunrise Primary Schools are the primary schools title holders in boys and girls respectively.
