CAF Champions League
Preliminary round, return leg
Friday result
KCCA 2-0 Africa Stars (Agg 4-3)
Mustafa Kizza and Allan Okello scored in the second half to hand KCCA a 2-0 win over African Stars from Namibia in their return leg of the CAF Champions league, preliminary round on Friday at the StarTimes stadium, Lugogo.
Trailing 3-2 from the first leg, the Ugandan champions needed at least a 1-0 win to progress to the next stage. However, the home side started on the low with less opportunities created.
The visitors compacted the midfield and left KCCA with no space to enjoy their free passing game thus moving to the wide.
Mustafa Kizza had a few opportunities wasted from the dead balls while Sadat Anaku was also a culprit of missed chances.
In the second half, Mike Mutebi introduced Jackson Nunda for Herbert Achai, Nicolas Kasozi for Gift Ali and Filbert Obenchan for Musa Ramadhan.
The changes brought confidence to KCCA for more attacks. In the 80th minute, Mustafa Kizza beautifully scored from a free kick after Jackson Nunda was brought down at the edge of the box.
The goal woke up the concerned fans who had endured pressure since the first whistle and saw the visitors miss a glorious chance in the opening three minutes. KCCA grew in confidence and were rewarded with the second in the 88th minute.
Despite an average afternoon, play maker Allan Okello shot from the edge of the box after a well build team attack involving him self, Nunda and Mike Mutyaba.
“We did not play to our best but I am happy we won. They compacted the midfield and went for man-to-man marking which denied us space to play. But after switching to build-up play, they got lost and eventually gave in,” noted KCCA FC Manager Mike Mutebi after the match. KCCA will play the winner between Matlama of Lesotho and Atletico Petroleos de Luanda of Angola.
