Uganda’s boxers at the ongoing All Africa Games Isaac Masembe and David Ssemujju have a chance to clinch Gold medals when they get into the ring for the finals this Thursday in Rabat, Morocco.
Ssemujju beat Abdel Moneim from Egypt by unanimous decision in middle weight after Masembe had knocked out Mordjane Ousama in the first round in the Welter weight. Both Ugandan fighters are now assured of at least Silver medals.
Ssemujju will fight Tarik Allali from Morocco while Masembe will fight Hamout Mohammed of Morocco. At 19 years and 312 days, Masembe will leave Morocco as the second youngest boxing medalist –second to Ethiopia’s Wibshet Dawit Bekele of 18 years and 354 days.
The other two are Egyptian Mousssa Moussa Youssef of 19 years and 332 days and DRC’s Nsaka Kapenga Idriss of 19 years and 359 days. Hellen Bireke fell Morocco’s Mardi Kadhija in the middle weight in her only bout at the games
. She however, already grabbed a bronze when she made it to semi finals through a bye after absence of opponent. Uganda has won medals in chess, badminton and athletics.
