Busoga College Mwiri retained the Boys Schools Cricket Week title on Saturday following a week’s action at five ovals; Lugogo, Kyambogo, Kings College Budo, Ndejje and Gayaza High School.
TheJinja-based school beat St John High School, Mukono by 65 runs (143/4 in 20 overs) in the finals played at Lugogo Cricket Oval.
Mwiri did not only claim its 18thcrown in a tournament that is played on T20 format, also claimed three individual awards; Hassan Mpanuka – player of the tournament, Kakuru Cyrus – best wicket keeper and Opio Ronald – best batsman.
Kakaire Godfrey – Masaka SSS, Edwin Nuwagaba – St John’s High School were named best bowlers and fielders respectively.
During the awards ceremony held at Cooper Chimney Restaurant in Lugogo, UCA CEO Martin Ondeko reiterated that the tournament is a huge boost for the Under 19 national team that later benefits the senior national team.
Players that made 100+ runs in a match were awarded with a brand new bat and a pair of gloves each. A team of 20 players was selected to attend 7-day residential camp on Sunday in Kololo.
Those who were in camp last year were automatically omitted so that other players to get this chance. After the training, 14 players will be selected to travel to Rwanda in October to play a series of games against Rwandan junior charges.
This will be one of key events in forming the new Under 19 (Baby Cricket Cranes) team. The schools cricket week was sponsored by; Uganda Cricket Association, International Cricket Council, Metro Tyers, Aziz Damani Sports Club and Bankstown Cricket Club.
