Zambia’s professional golfer Muthiya Madalisto was on Saturday crowned the 2019 Castle Lite Uganda Open Golf Tournament – Professionals category after returning a 279 total gross (72, 66, 69 and 72), nine-under par at the 72-stroke play competition from Wednesday to Saturday at the Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort and Spa, Kigo.

The 36-year old, 3who turned professional in 2005 also claimed a Shs41m cash prize. This was Madalisto’s second Uganda Open Pro title after the 2015 victory.

“It is very exciting to win a second title at the same event. Thanks to all the sponsors and Lake Victoria Serena,” he noted after receiving his accolade from Uganda Golf Union President Innocent Kihika; flanked by Nile Breweries Limited (NBL) representatives and the like.

Madalisto was initially meant to play at the Asian Tour – the principal men’s professional golf tour in Asia but due to ‘visa issues’, he ended up at Uganda Open.

The Runner up Charamba Tongoona received Shs27m while the second Runner up and 2017 winner Stephen Ferrreira received Shs15m.

Last year’s champion Dismas Indiza finished fourth and got Shs11m. Philip Kasozi emerged the best placed Ugandan having finished 13th with a total gross of 293.

The Pros played for a cash prize of $50,000 that was distributed among them in respect to positions. Players from 19 countries graced the pros event that also doubled as the Safari Pro Tour –a qualifier to the European Tour.

Entebe Golf Club will host another Safari Tour leg next month while Uganda Golf Club will host another early next year.

The 2019 Uganda Open was sponsored by Nile Breweries Limited through the Castle Lite brand with Uganda Tourism Board (UTB), Liquid Telecom, Pepsi, Britam, Absa, Isuzu and NTV as co-sponsors.
