As part of the just concluded tax payer appreciation month activities that ran for the whole month of September, Uganda Revenue Authority (URA)will play a football match against Chief Executive officers (CEOs) of tax-paying companies this Friday at Legends sports grounds.
All proceeds from the match will be used to procure two motorized boats for the children of Bwama primary school in one of the islands of lake Bunyonyi in Kabale district, who risk lives crossing the lake in canoes to go to school.
These children also lack access to food or clean drinking water affects their concentration levels and academic performance.
The story of Bwama school children shot to the limelight in 2017,when a video was published showing these children as they braved the morning cold to cross the lake to attend school in Canoes.
Some days when the waters are murky, they don’t attend school and it is for this background that URA has organized this charity sports event to support these children’s education experience -since children are the future of this nation.
Vincent Seruma, the Assistant Commissioner Public and Corporate affairs at URA said that that they want to raise over shs150m which will be used to buy motorized boats to provide a means of transport to the children of Bwama Primary school and the surrounding communities.
Part of the money will also be used to procure life jackets and for the installation of a safe water purification system at the school.
The Managing Director of Diamond Trust Bank Varghese Thambi, who are also going to take part, said that they want to use the opportunity to give back to the community.
He said that whatever side wins is not important, but the community benefiting.
