Professional golfers (pros) are competing for a total kit of Shs20m during this 22nd edition of the JBG Golf Open which winds down this Saturday at the par 71 Entebbe Golf Club.
The cash prize was revealed on Wednesday during the event’s launch at the JBG offices in Kololo, Kampala. Gauff Consultants Ltd Managing Director Emmanuel Mugamba handed over a Shs20m cheque to Entebbe Club Chairman Twinemanzi Tumubweine.
Thirty three (33) Pros teed off on Wednesday and played 54 holes by Friday before the event climaxes this Saturday.
Entebbe Golf Club star, Herman ‘Deco’ Mutebi, who turned Pro about a year ago, was day one leader with gross 67, playing 4-under par. He was only two strokes better than Silver Opio who played 2-under par.
Five-time Uganda Golf Open ladies winner Flavia Namakula is the only lady in the Pros category and she managed a gross of 75 on day one.
She was also the only Pro lady at the 2019 Uganda Open. The main event this Saturday has subsidiary categories with more than 200 golfers set for the finale.
Organizers have promised a great 19th hole experience at the lake side course that will be compounded with lots of merry making activities till early hours of Sunday.
Last year, Hong Kong golfer Chen out-competed a total of 246 golfers to claim the overall crown off 41 points. Uganda Golf Union Lady president Eva Magala scooped 38 points to beat all the ladies in the house.
Joel Basalaine emerged gross winner with a total gross of 147. Philip Kasozi – 215 gross emerged winner in the pros category whilst Mariera Isaac managed 34 points to claim the seniors (55+ years) category.
