Despite missing out on the world record, Uganda’s heavy weight powerlifter Roy Mubiru managed to scoop Gold at the 2019 WPA World Cup powerlifting Invitational Championships held Bremerton Washington on Sunday.
Mubiru won his age group category (40-45) under 124kg tested raw class. This brings it to a total of four Gold medals he has won this year –with two won in May at the 2019 World Cup of powerlifting championships in Ukraine and the other at the 32rd Annual CAN-AM International championships in Brattleboro, USA.
Mubiru missed out on breaking a world record in his category which demanded him to a total lift of 2000 kilograms in three styles deadlift, Squat and bench press.
He plans to make another attempt for the world record breaking in May next year in Canada. Mubiru, who is based in USA, will be part of the Uganda team participating in the inaugural All Africa Nations powerlifting championship which will attract seven African countries.
The championship will be held in Kampala at the MTN Arena on November 3 this year. Nations that have indicated intention to partake in this All African championship include; Cameroon, Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa and hosts Uganda. Rwanda and Tanzania are also expected to be part.
