UCU vs SLAU, Namboole
St. Lawrence University (SLAU) matched toiled to their maiden Pepsi University league after a 3-2 win over 2017 champions Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) in penalties after a 1-1 second leg stalemate in Nkozi on Friday.
SLAU will meet other first finalists Uganda Christian University (UCU) in the 2019 final due November 3 at the Namboole stadium.
Prior to the return leg, SLAU Coach Davis Nono Ssozi noted that his side had never failed to score in the game for the last two editions and this was evident when Ssemugera Missi headed-in Sseruwu Collins free kick in the opening 15 minutes to give them a desired lead.
The hosts, who are celebrating their 26th anniversary, leveled matters in the 55th minute through Derrick Kayondo’s spectacular header.
The 1-1 return leg result tied the game to a 2-2 aggregate score –thus forcing penalty shoot-outs where the UMU only managed to convert two kicks against three by the visitors.
It was the second consecutive time SLAU reached the last four –having been eliminated by Kampala University (KU) at the same stage last year before KU lost to Kyambogo in the final.
Both SLAU and UCU, who eliminated Bugema University in penalties in the other earlier semi final, are at the final for the first time and will be seeking their maiden title and the Shs12m winners’ cash prize courtesy of sponsors Pepsi.
