The Uganda Crested Cranes have been drawn against neighbors Burundi in the first round of the 2020 Africa Women Cup of Nations (AWCON) qualifiers. The draws were held in Cairo, Egypt on Wednesday.

The Crested Cranes will face a side they defeated 2-0 in the third place play-off of the 2019 CECAFA Women’s Challenge Cup in Tanzania recently. The first round encounters will be played on 6th and 14th April next year while the second round ties are scheduled for June.

There are eleven places for grabs in the continental showpiece slated for November 2020. The tournament hosts though are yet to be confirmed after the initial hosts Congo Brazaville pulled out. The aggregate winner between Uganda and Burundi will face giants Cameroon in the second and final round.

Cameroon received a bye to the next round alongside holders Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea, Morocco, South Africa, Mali, Ghana and Ivory Coast. CECAFA heavyweights Kenya and Tanzania will also renew their rivalry in the first round with the eventual winner destined to take on the winner between D.R. Congo and Sao Tome and Principe. Record champions Super Falcons of Nigeria are the holders after edging South Africa in the final on penalties of the 2018 edition in Ghana.
