After bagging a winning start to the 2019 CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup with a slim 2-1 victory over Burundi at the StarTimes Stadium Lugogo on Saturday evening, the Uganda Cranes went swimming this Sunday before heading for a recovery training session in the evening (6pm) at the StarTimes stadium, Lugogo.
Proline FC midfielder Bright Anukani opened up the scoring for the hosts in the 8th minute with a low shot following striker Fahad Bayo headed pass. In the 21st minute, Fahad Bayo turned from provider to scorer as he doubled Uganda’s lead before the break.
Burundi pulled one back after the break from the spot. Cedric Dnny Rurasenga netted the consolation at an hour mark. Uganda Cranes would have added the third goal but Allan Okello’s shot hit the post in the 77th minute while Bayo’s earlier goal had been controversially ruled offside.

“We were very much pleased with the first half and our players were implementing what we have practiced. All we wanted to do was working well in the first half and new Burundi would be aggressive in second half. It’s wasn’t good in the second half but still, we deserved the three points,” said Uganda Cranes head coach Johnathan McKinstry during a post-match press conference.
The northern Irish made three changes in the second half –with KCCA midfielder Nicolas Kasozi replacing Shafiq Kagimu in the 69th minute before a double changeten minutes later saw Joackim Ojera and Muzamiru Mutyaba coming on for Viane Sekajugo and Bright Anukani respectively.
Uganda returns to action this Monday evening as they take on Somalia at Lugogo in the second game after Eritrea takes on Burundi earlier in the afternoon at the same venue. In the other Group A fixture, Somalia and Djibouti played to a goal-less stalemate earlier in the day at the same venue.
