JKL Lady Dolphins 62-55 UCU Lady Canons (OT)

JKL Lady Canons prevailed over Uganda Christian University (UCU) on Wednesday in Game seven at the Indoor Arena to retain the National Women basketball title.

The Lady Dolphins, who had forced a decider after winning Sunday’s game six at YMCA, had to win from an overtime 62-55 in an epic encounter that had entrance fees waved off by FUBA in a bid to promote women basketball.

Hope Akello put up splendid performance with game high 18 points, 16 rebounds and five assists to cap her player of the match performance. Ritah Imanishimwe had 10 points, Stella Oyella scored 9 points and 16 rebounds while Namuwaya Muhayimuna registered 7 rebounds for the Lady Dolphins. UCU’s Zainah Lokwameri had 17 points and 7 rebounds before she was stretched off injured. Rose Akon scored a double-double of 13 points and 14 rebounds in a losing effort.

It was an intense game all through

JKL Lady Dolphins led 16-11 after the first quarter and led 44-37 going into the last frame. UCU made a 7-0 run before Zainah left Flavia Oketcho crawling on the ground to lay up and give UCU a 46-44 lead with 5:48 remaining.

UCU’s Rhoda Naggita hesitated to make a game winning shot just at the buzzer for the sides to finish the last quarter square 52-52 which led to an overtime. With Hope having fouled out in the closing seconds of the last quarter, UCU could not capitalise on the fact as Lady Dolphins’ Evelyn Nakiyingi’s deep three sealed the fate with a 61-50 final score.

UCU technical staff could not sit

UCU and defunct Lady Bucks are the record seven-time winners and UCU, who also lost to JKL last season in the final as the later got their first ever title, blew chance to move to eight as record winners.
