Vipers SC run to the title hit a hard rock on Friday after suffering a 1-0 home loss to SC Villa on Friday at the St Mary’s stadium, Kitende in the headlining fixture of the match day 18 in the StarTimes Uganda premier league. Former player Bashir Mutanda headed home in the 53rd minute to hand SC Villa their first win of second round.
The striker who returned from injury on match day 17 as a substitute against Busoga United finished off Derrick Ndahiro cross but was lucky that his effort was finished off by goal keeper Fabien Mutombora.
Mutanda’s header came off the post to hit Mutombora’s back who was at full stretch. It was the first goal of the season for the striker who scored 13 times last term.
It was Vipers’ first loss at home this season but second overall which left them 4 points above second placed KCCA. The reigning champions beat Tooro United 1-0 at home courtesy of Sunday Opio tap in from the corner.
The two sides played to a goalless draw in the reverse fixture at Namboole. Jogoos have also hit Vipers at home for the second consecutive season after their 3-1 win in their last visit at Kitende last season.
At Lugogo, Police continued with their winning run after Herman Wasswa scored from the spot in the three minutes of added time to give them a 1-0 home win over Kyetume at StarTimes stadium, Lugogo.
This was the first match of the double header before KCCA beat Tooro United in the second game at the same venue. Vipers stay at the summit with 42 points, 4 above KCCA while SC Villa temporarily moved third with 30 points from 18 games.
