Vipers SC moved to five points clear the summit of the StarTimes Uganda premier league after a hard fought 1-0 victory over Arua-based Onduparaka on Sunday a the St Marys stadium, Kitende.
Captain Godfrey Wasswa, who had the armband in absence of Halid Lwaliwa, scored the only goal of the day as Fred Kajoba earned his first victory as Vipers SC coach after replacing Edward Golola.
Wasswa curled home a beautiful free kick at the top right corner after Paul Mucureezi had been fouled outside the box in the 56th minute.
It was Wasswa’s first goal of the season on Kajoba’s first game in front of home crowds after opening with a barren stalemate against Mbarara City on road.
“It’s a great victory for us and we want to maintain the gap. They gave us a hard time but we took our chance and that was the big difference,” said goal scorer Wasswa.
“It was a good game especially in the first half. I was happy with the boys, they nicely passed the ball around but we still have to improve our game,” noted Edward Kajoba, the Vipers SC head coach.
Onduparaka’s best chance saw substitute Bheto Bashir’s poor effort saved by goal keeper Fabien Mutombora after being released by Jamal Malish.
Vipers left back Farouk Musisi, who started for the first time second game of the season in place of Aziz Kayondo rattled the crossbar off Mucureezi cross inside the opening minutes.
With 11 goals, Vipers SC striker Fahad Bayo was lucky to escape a red card after his poor tackle against Onduparaka skipper Mohammed Rashid minutes after his first booking.
The 14th victory moved means Vipers to 46 points after 20 games, five above second placed and reigning champions KCCA that earlier lost 2-1 away to boggy URA FC in Bombo.
Onduparaka remain fifth with 30 points from 20 games ahead of their clash at home against six-time champions Express FC while Vipers visit BUL FC in Njeru on Sunday. Both clashes will be shown live at Sanyuka TV.
