Local cricket governing body Uganda Cricket Association (UCA) has cancelled all the 2020 domestic activities due to the continued ban on sports because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The affected events are; 50 Over Men’s National League, 50 Overs Women’s National League and the Schools’ Cricket Week (both Boys and Girls).
According to the association’s press release issued on Monday, there will be no relegation or promotion for the calendar year 2020. The team placements will remain as at the conclusion of the 2019 cricket season.
However, UCA already submitted draft SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) to the Government to necessitate resumption of field activities and once approved and in cognisance of the time left in the year, UCA will organise short format tournaments to
engage the players and fans.
For the exceptional performers in the 2019 Season, UCA is organizing an award and recognition ceremony which will be communicated in due course as soon as arrangements are confirmed.
The association now urges all players and teams to continue observing the Ministry of Health guidelines to ensure that everyone is healthy when competitive play is reinstated.
“It was a very difficult decision to make but the best under the current circumstances. We have run our permutations and will not be able to complete the scheduled leagues having in mind the time left in the year,” Martin Ondeko, CEO Uganda Cricket said via the press release.
All sports activities in Uganda are still at a halt since March this year. Most federations have cancelled leagues but some have drafted tentative activity calendars to guide them once play is reinstated.
