The Uganda U-20 women’s national volleyball team has entered a residential training camp in Boni Consilii Girls’ Vocational Secondary School in Isingiro District ahead of the CAVB (Confederation of African Volleyball) Age Group competition slated for 4 to 13 December 2020 at the Lugogo Indoor Stadium in Kampala.
There are 16 players in the camp and are under the stewardship Coach Alex Mbaine.
The team will camp in the West for a period of two weeks. They will then return to Kampala for practice sessions in Lugogo before the event serves off.
The previous CAVB Age Group Competition was held in Nairobi, Kenya and Uganda finished 9th. Coach Mbaine explains why his side didn’t put up a good shift last time out.
“In Nairobi the team had limited time to train together due to financial challenges, there was no time for camp and this affected the team’s performance.” Mbaine told Inside Volleyball.
However, playing in their backyard this time round, Mbaine is backing his side for a top three finish.
“But now we have some time to prepare the girls, our target is a podium finish,” Mbaine added.
Tanzania, Egypt, Tunisia, Cameroon and host Uganda have sent preliminary inquiries to Uganda Volleyball Federation ahead of the event.
However, FIVB has extended the deadline for continental qualifiers for the 2021 FIVB Volleyball Age Group World Championships to 28 February 2021 due to Covid-19.
