Buganda Masaza Cup side Gomba Lions FC beat Uganda Premier League outfit SC Villa 1-0 in a friendly match played on Sunday at Kabulasoke Core PTC.
Jackson Ssemugabi scored the only goal of the game in the 7th minute of play after beating Villa’s Keni Saidi on the near post moments after George Kaddu’s long throw-in from his own half.
In the 25th minute Villa midfielder Ronald Ssekiganda almost evened matters but his effort hit the wood work.
Later in the match Villa forward Issac Ogwang aimed to cause havoc to Gomba backline bodies but he couldn’t break the dead lock.
Both sides rang in lots of changes after the break with only one substitution made in the first half.
The friendly match was organized by Gomba Ssaza management and was primarily intended for Gomba’s fundraising drive ahead of the Masaza Cup final and also for merry making for the fans and the like.
Gomba Lions FC will play Buddu in the forth coming edition of the Masaza Cup final whose date is yet to be confirmed. This will be a repeat of the 2016 final of the Masaza Cup tournament.
Gomba are in pursuit for a record fifth Masaza Cup title having triumphed during the 2004, 2009, 2014 and 2017 stagings.
