FIBA has confirmed that Uganda’s games that were postponed in the second window of the Afrobasket Qualifiers will be played between June 15th and July 15th 2021 in a yet to be named venue.
Uganda’s games for the February window held at Monastir, Tunisia were called off due to Covid-19 positive cases in Silverbacks (Uganda men’s team) camp but FIBA has issued a new development.
“Following the postponement of Uganda’s games in application of the COVID-19 Protocol for FIBA Official National Team and Club Competitions and the advice of its Medical Commission, the pending Group E Uganda games, Uganda – Egypt, Morocco – Uganda and Cape Verde – Uganda, will be played between June 15 and July 15, 2021 at a venue to be decided.
FIBA,” FIBA said in a statement.
There will be discussions between FIBA and the federation involved (FUBA – Federation of Uganda Basketball Associations) to when the exact dates and venue will be communicated.
FUBA who have been worried about a possibility of Silverbacks’ games getting totally cancelled have expressed a sigh of relief.
“It is a huge relief for us! We are delighted and excited about the opportunity to compete again. We
are confident that our team will qualify and be in Kigali come August”, Nasser Sserunjogi – FUBA
President said in a missive.
FUBA says that it’s fully committed to adhering to the new way forward and will communicate in due time on the preparations for this tournament as they seek a ticket to the FIBA AfroBasket scheduled to be held
in Kigali, Rwanda from August 24 to September 5, 2021.
However, in another development, following the non-appearance of Equatorial Guinea in their game against Cameroon on February 19, 2021 due to the late arrival of the delegation of Equatorial Guinea in Yaounde, the game has been forfeited in favor of Cameroon.
The decision is based upon the unjustified late arrival of the Equatorial Guinea delegation in Yaounde, the related inobservance of the relevant provisions of the FIBA COVID-19 Protocol and the FIBA AfroBasket 2021 Qualifiers Handbook that lead to the failure to appear at the game at the scheduled time and place.
