Uganda Rugby Cranes Sevens have finished sixth in the men’s pool of the second and final tournament of the Emirates Invitational 7s that came to a close on Friday in Dubai.
Uganda entered the tournament as the lowest ranked men’s team (out of eight) but managed to finish above Japan and Spain who settled for the seventh and eighth positions respectively in the final phase of the event. In the first tournament played last weekend, Uganda finished seventh, above Spain.
Uganda had a false start to the second tournament of the invitational meet played at the Sevens Stadium losing all its matches against Kenya, Spain and Canada; 28-10, 26-07 and 24-21 respectively on day one (Thursday).
On day two/final day (Friday), Uganda again started on wrong footing losing 33-07 to France.
However, Uganda registered a hard fought 24-19 win against Japan in their second game. Uganda’s tries were scored Philip Wokorach (2), Desire Ayera, Isaac Massanganzira and Michael Wokorach with Philip utilizing two extras.
In the Plate final, Uganda lost 05-36 to Kenya. Aaron Ofoywroth scored Uganda’s unconverted try.
Kenya finished fifth in the tournament just above Uganda.
Argentina emerged atop in the men’s pool followed by Canada, France and Chile respectively. Canada topped the women’s category.
As they prepare for Olympics, the teams trained and played all rugby at The Sevens Stadium behind closed doors, with spectators not allowed in attendance.
