Cheptegei, Kenyan runners to spice up national track and field trials
World Champion Joshua Cheptegei and Kenyan runners in the weekend National Track and Field Trials will offer some welcome respite to Ugandan athletes vying to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
A mix of ideal weather, hot competition and great pacemaking could be able to cause fast times in the 6th Trial scheduled for April 24, 2021 at Namboole Stadium where Cheptegei will be the biggest star to watch.
This time Cheptegei will not be competing in his 5000m/10,000m specialty but 1500m which will help him develop speed for 5000m ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
The presence of the World Champion in middle distance and the invited Kenyan runners especially in the long distance races will help strengthen the quality of the national trials and bid for Ugandans runners to hit the Olympic Games qualifying standards.
Ugandans Ronald Musagala, Abu Mayanja will be in the spotlight and bound to enjoy the benefits of Cheptegei and Kenyan stiff opposition in the 1500m as pacers towards chasing their Olympic qualification dream.
For local content, stiff competition in middle distance races is also expected on the day’s menu with World Champion Halima Nakaayi against new kid on the block, Prisca Chesang Chemweno currently enjoying good form in 800m/1500m.
