Ugandan to officiate at boxing events of the Olympics


Uganda referee and judge Antonio Stephen Aciga Fula has been selected by the Boxing Task Force of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics to officiate at the games in the boxing category.

“I am pleased to inform you that you have been selected by the Boxing Task Force to take part as a Technical officer (3-star Referee and Judge) for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics Games taking place from July 26th to August 8th, 2021,” part of the letter meant for Aciga and signed by Chairman Boxing Task Force at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Morinari Watanabe read.

Aciga is a 3-star AIBA certified coach and referee and will be the only Ugandan officiating at the boxing events.

Uganda Boxing Federation President, Moses Muhangi, also AIBA ITO has welcomed this development saying that it’s good of the game locally.

“We will continue striving to develop boxing in Uganda regardless of the few local problems,” Muhangi said in a brief missive.

The tentative date for Aciga’s arrival to Tokyo is between 18-21 July (TBD), competition days are slated for July 24th to August 8th and departure will be on August 9th.

Three Ugandan boxers alias Bombers will feature at the Olympics, that is; Musa Shadir Bwogi (Captain – 69kg), David Ssemujju (75kg) and Catherine Nanziri (49kg).

Boxing at the Tokyo 2020 Games in 2021 will be the sport’s most gender-equal Olympic competition ever, with two extra women’s weight divisions.
