The Rwanda national U-23 team has pulled out of the upcoming CECAFA tournament that is scheduled to start on 17th July in Ethiopian.
In a statement released by the Federation of Rwanda Football Association, the Rwanda national team will not be participating in the regional tournament because of the recrudescence of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Fédération Rwandaise de Football Association would like to inform the general public and members of the media that due to the recrudescence of the Covid-19 pandemic in the region and Rwanda particularly, which raises assumptions of the presence of the highly infectious COVID-19 Delta Variant. Rwandese side me Scandinavia WFC as well will not take part in the upcoming CAF WCL CECAFA Zonal Qualifiers 2021 scheduled for July 17th to July 31st 2021 in Kenya.
The Rwanda U-23 team had initially been summoned by newly appointed coach Sosthene Habimana about two weeks ago.
Rwanda also didn’t take part in the most recent CECAFA Challenge Cup held in Uganda in 2019.
Uganda is the defending champion of the competition having won it for a record 15th time in 2019.
