Uganda’s middle distance runner Winnie Nanyondo has qualified for the semifinals of the Women’s 1500m at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics after finishing second in the quarter finals on Monday morning.
Nanyondo who was seeded in heat three posted a time of 4:02.24 to emerge second best and also make amends for her collapse during the semifinals of the Women’s 800m earlier on.
Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon emerged first with a winning time of 4:01.40. She was a pre-race favorite.
The top six in each of the three heats and next fast six also advanced to the semis.
The Women’s 1500m semifinal will be held on Wednesday at the Olympic Stadium in Japan and Nanyondo will be aiming for her a spot in the final as she pursues her maiden silverware at the games.
The Olympic Games will wind down this coming weekend and Uganda’s hopes of silverware still remains in track events.
