The 2021 Uganda Hockey season (local competitions) will come to a close on Saturday, 6th November and to cap it, the Uganda Cup finals (both men and women) and an award ceremony for it and for the recently concluded Uganda Baati National Hockey League will be held in Lugogo, Kampala.
“…Uganda Hockey shall hold a combined Awards Ceremony for both Championships (league and cup). This shall in turn call for a slight change in the timings of the Uganda Cup finals,” local hockey governing body Uganda Hockey Association (UHA) said in a missive recently.
In the opening cup finals slated for 12 PM, women’s league winners Wananchi SC will take on Deliverance Church HC as both sides seek to win the inaugural edition.
And to cap this year’s local competitions, fans will be treated to a possible cracker when perennial rivals Weatherhead HC and Wananchi SC faceoff in the men’s cup finals slated for 1:30 PM. Weatherhead are men’s league holders and will seek to clinch the cup as well though Wananchi is no easy side.
After the matches, the curtains for this season will be drawn down in an awards ceremony at the same venue. The event is slated for 3 PM and will be graced by officials from top sports governing bodies.
However, the 2021 season was halted in June due to the Covid-19 second wave lockdown. Competitive play later hit-off after a two-months hiatus.
Up next for Uganda Hockey is the Africa Cup of Nations (ACN) slated for January 2022 in Accra, Ghana.
Earlier on UHA named a technical bench for its senior teams (men and women) with the continental showpiece around the corner. Provisional squads for the same have been named and will start training on 8th November.
