Event: Guinness 7s Season Finale
Dates: 27th & 28th November 2021
Venue: Legends Grounds, Kampala
The winner of the 2021 Guinness 7s will either be Betway Kobs or Stanbic Black Pirates with the Rugby Sevens Series set to wind down this weekend at Legends Grounds in Kampala.
Also known as the Guinness Coronation Sevens, the finale of this year’s series which will be played on Saturday 27th & Sunday 28th November will see the winner’s title awarded to either holders Kobs or 2018 champions Pirates with the pair having dominated proceedings in the previous five circuits.
Kobs still have an upper hand though as they lead the series table with 102 points, just three ahead of second placed Black Pirates. Third placed Heathens have 89 points and are technically out of the title race.
To hoist the winner’s trophy, all Kobs need to do is to reach the Main Cup final of the Coronation circuit, win or loose, they triumph at Legends. It could even get easier for them if Pirates loose either in the quarters or semis.
However, for Pirates, it’s a tricky one as they must win the circuit and also hope that Kobs don’t reach the final. Pirates now partly count on other teams to help them get the job done and possibly a Kobs’ party spoiler emerges before the final.
Kobs won the opening three circuits of the series that is; the first leg (Mileke 7s) held at Legends. They later triumphed in Gulu (Northern) and Soroti (Eastern) circuits beating Pirates (twice) and Heathens once in the finals.
For Pirates, they beat Heathens and Kobs in their own circuit (Henry Rujumba 7s) and Kigezi 7s held in Kabale respectively to win the fourth and fifth circuits of the series.
The final leg of the series will be hosted by Kobs and is being organized by Beyond Sports Organization (BSO). The event was initially slated for the previous weekend but was postponed due to security issues then following twin explosions in Kampala.
Pirates who have won back to back circuits are in Pool A alongside their own development side Sailors, Warriors and Rams 2.
Pool B has log leaders Betway Kobs, Buffaloes, Eagles and Kisubi Pacers while Heathens, Rams, Rhinos and Entebbe Jaguars are in Pool C. Pool D has Jinja Hippos, Mongers, Impis and Stallions.
