2021 Guinness 7s Series
Winners: Kobs
Coronation Sevens final
Kobs 07-14 Black Pirates
Albeit losing 07-14 to Stanbic Black Pirates in the finals of the last circuit (Coronation Sevens) of the 2021 Guinness 7s, Betway Kobs Rugby Club on Sunday evening emerged overall winners of the series following the conclusion of this year’s two-month long season at Legends Grounds in Kampala.
The Sunday result in the main cup finals (Kobs 7-14 Pirates) meant that both teams finish the series with 121 points after six exciting circuits but the former take the overall winners’ trophy because of their superior points difference for the entire season.
Having demolished Mongers 52-07 in the second semifinal earlier in the day, Kobs also Rugby Premier League title holders had technically won and defended the 7s series title. Pirates though also won their semifinal clash against Heathens 19-12.
To win the series, Pirates needed to have beaten Kobs with a score margin of 59 points in the final, a mission close to impossible with the winner’s trophy already on display by then.
However, a 07-14 win for Pirates meant that they only hoist the circuit accolade while the hosts claimed the overall winners’ trophy something that caused celebration in both camps.

Kobs Coach Davis Kyewalabye couldn’t hide his delight but attributes his side’s triumph to the players’ hard work through out the campaign.
“This is an exciting day for us as a team. Winning the series means a lot, it’s a big achievement and I believe the players have gained lots of experience going forward,” Kyewalabye said before thanking his players for their commitment from day one.
Pirates Coach Robert Musinguzi was however full of praise for his boys who fought hard till the last minute of the series adding that they will go for it again next season, but next time with much effort and desire.
Pirates star Conrad Wanyama was named circuit MVP and claimed UGX250,000 but Kobs Captain Joseph Aredo was named series overall MVP and bagged UGX500,000.
Money-wise, Kobs got an overall 5 Million Shillings, 3 Million from Guinness Uganda for winning the series and 2 Million for finishing second in the final circuit, a prize they got from Stanbic Bank Uganda.
Pirates too pocketed 5 Million Shillings, 2 Million from Guinness for finishing second in the series and 3 Million Shillings from Stanbic Bank for winning the circuit.
Heathens who finished the season third with 106 points were rewarded with an overall 2 Million Shillings, 1 Million from Guinness and the other from the Coronation Sevens organizers.
