NBL: Delight for Nyong Marrier as Victoria University get off the mark

Victoria University’s Nyong Marrier posted a game high 30 points plus 11 rebounds as his side beat UCU Canons 66-63 on Sunday in the final Tusker Lite National Basketball League (NBL) fixture of the night at the MTN Arena Lugogo in Kampala.

It was Victoria University’s maiden win of the 2022 Tusker Lite sponsored season and it came against a giant side in the shape of UCU Canons.

Nyong Marrier who was the star of the night and picked the Tusker Lite player of the match gong delights in Victoria University’s heroics and believes that the triumph could lay a winning blue print for them for the remainder of the regular season.

“It is a great feeling to finally win in the NBL. I’m happy for the players and the rest of the team, including the fans,” Nyong Marrier said adding that; “I believe that this win will energize us going forward.”

Other good performers for Victoria University included Cedric Alema and Maker Mayen off 8 points plus 6 rebounds, 1 assist and 7 points plus 10 rebounds, 4 assists respectively.

For UCU, Jerry Samson Kayanga shot 17 points, 12 rebounds and 2 assists. Rogers John Baptist Dauna had 16 points, 15 rebounds and 3 assists.

Victoria University who are playing in the men’s top tier division for the first time had a false start to the season losing six games before facing UCU. They lost to KCCA, JKL Dolphins, City Oilers, Ndejje Angels and Our Saviour.

However, it was UCU’s first loss of the season having previously beaten KIU Titans, Tropical Royals, Falcons, KCCA Panthers, UPDF Tomahawks and Power.

Victoria University are now joint 12th on the table with Sharing Youth on the 13-team table whilst UCU top the men’s division with 13 points.
