Unconverted tries by Grace Auma and Peace Lekuru earned Uganda Lady Cranes an important 10-00 victory over Zimbabwe in the quarter finals of the 2022 Rugby Africa Women’s 7s on Saturday in Jammel, Tunisia.

Having triumphed in all their group stage games on Friday, Uganda needed a semi final victory from the event to make it to the women’s 7s Rugby World Cup set to be held in Cape Town, South Africa in September 2022. Only two slots were available, one for hosts and the other best team.

Lady Cranes also needed to have emerged victors to qualify for the Commonwealth Games scheduled for September this year in Birmingham. Only one slot was available from the Jammel event.

A 17-12 loss to Madagascar in the semi final meant that Lady Cranes’ dream to make it to the above prestigious events came to a halt.

Lady Cranes later lost 15-17 to hosts Tunisia in the 3rd position playoff, denying them a chance to return home with silverware.

However, in the final, South Africa managed a slim 15-14 victory over Madagascar.

The victory earns South Africa a ticket to the Commonwealth Games. For the World Cup, they will be joined by Madagascar.
