NBL: UCU Lady Canons hold off KIU Rangers

UCU Lady Canons held on in the final stages of the game to withstand KIU Rangers’ charge to win their Tusker Lite National Basketball League (NBL) clash 76-74 on Sunday at the MTN Arena Lugogo, in Kampala.

With 1:10 minutes to play, Hajjara Najjuko made a 3-point jump shot to give Lady Canons a one-point lead after trailing 69-71.

Millicent Otieno summed up Lady Canons’ strong finish to the game shooting four points as the ladies in blue side went ahead to beat their fellow university side 76-74.

However, maestro Rose Akon was the Lady Canons hero after she posted a double double of 29 points, 24 rebounds and 3 assists as the Mukono based outfit made another comeback. She was named Tusker Lite player of the game.

For Najjuko and Otieno, they also had a good game shooting 6 points, 6 rebounds plus 7 rebounds and 9 points, 2 rebounds and 1 assist respectively.

Sharon Kirabo led KIU Rangers in a losing effort managing 27 points, 8 rebounds and 2 assists.

Other good performers included Uwiweza Nenitte who shot 8 points, 14 rebounds 11 assists whilst Ines Kanyamunza had 11 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists.

UCU Lady Canons are second on the 10-team table of the women’s top tier division with 19 points off eight wins and three losses (11 games played).

KIU Rangers on the other hand have the same statistics like Lady Canons but the latter have a better game-points difference hence the Kansanga based side settle for third position.

The Tusker Lite National Basketball League which is now in its second round continues this week.
