Uganda Christian University (UCU) outfits Lady Canons and Canons were all triumphant in the two Tusker Lite National Basketball League (NBL) games played on Friday night at the MTN Arena, Lugogo in Kampala.

Lady Canons beat KCCA Leopards 51-63 in the opening game of the evening whilst Canons survived a scare to beat Betway Power 53-66 in the other game.

In the women’s game, Lady Canons came out strong with a 12-point lead and albeit KCCA’s Catherine Haruri posting 15 points, it wasn’t enough to seal the win for the Leopards.

It was Lady Canons’ ‘sharp shooter’ Millicent Otieno who stole the show, posting 21 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. She was named Tusker Lite player of the game.

Other top performers for Lady Canons were Rose Akon with 14 points, 12 rebounds and 1 assist. Shakira Nanvubya shot 5 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists whilst Aziida Nabayunga managed 7 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists.

Lady Canons lead the women’s division table but have the same number of points (21) just like second placed KIU Rangers and third placed KCCA Leopards.

However, in the men’s game, Fadhili Chuma guided Canons to victory over Power shooting 16 points, 10 rebounds and 3 assists. He was named Tusker Lite player of the game.

After a shaky start, Power had a good second quarter but the university side made amends in the fourth quarter to seal a win after two straight losses.

Canons are second on the 13-team men’s division table with 25 points, three behind leaders City Oilers and just one ahead of third placed Power.

The second round of the Tusker Lite National Basketball League continues throughout the weekend at YMCA basketball court in Wandegeya (Saturday) and at Lugogo (Sunday).
