Afedra on target as Peaky Blinders retain Budo League

Wide forward Daniel Afedra scored the only goal of the game as Peaky Blinders beat Abachuba 1-0 in the main cup final of Season 5 of the Budo League that came to close on Sunday at Legends Grounds in Kampala.

Known as Ronaldo in football circles, Afedra, a Huawei Certified Network Engineer, Data Scientist and Software Engineer capitalized on Abachuba’s miscommunication at the back to slot home at close range and he later did the Cristiano Ronaldo ‘siu’ celebration at the right flank corner flag where he was joined by his teammates.

Victory means that Peaky Blinders who beat BIFA 9-8 on penalties in the semis retain the title having won the previous edition. The side also made their third straight appearance in this edition’s finals but they finished as runners up in season 3.

Peaky Blinders Captain Jonathan Sentamu said that it’s an honor to lead a side that has reached three finals in a row and have hoisted the championship for a second straight season. He however recognizes his team’s collective efforts especially in the final bend of the season.

“There has been a massive effort from each and everyone from the team. The boys really worked hard and it paid off,” Sentamu said adding that; “in the regular season we faced some challenges but the winning mentality was back during the finale. It was a massive thing for us.”

The Budo League is sponsored by Guinness Uganda and the two have been partnering for a while now.

Guinness Brand Manager, Elizabeth Mutamuliza says that the league has continued to grow and that has helped them reach and interact with so many consumers of the brand.

“One of the things we strive to do is to reach so many consumers in their spaces like social settings and being part of the Budo League has helped us do that because numbers have grown and of course the sales,” Mutamuliza said adding that; “for us it has been fantastic and we look forward to the new season and growing with the league.”

League President Christopher Segawa revealed that the inaugural Guinness Budo League Awards will be happening on 30th July 2022 at the Kampala Serena, Victoria Ballroom.

Meanwhile, in the George Semivule Cup (second tier event), Dujay FC, class of 2017 emerged 2-1 winners over Team Massape, class of 2004.

The season finale of the Budo League lived to it’s a hype with lots of glamour including delivering of the trophy with a helicopter, fireworks display and local artists performances.

Bebe Cool entertained the crowd.

The Budo League is a bi-weekly Sunday football league and socializing/networking event for the alumni of King’s College Budo. The teams are formed by the class years with outfits fielding nine or sometimes 10 (if you’ve a lady in your team) players.

Champions Peaky Blinders are class of 2014 while runners up Abachuba are class of 2012.
